Pink rose with lace and leaves design

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A drawn design of a pink rose in full bloom, outlined in black with soft red and pink shading on the petals. Leaves with dark outlines and a fine lace-like pattern frame the rose beneath it. The design sits on pale paper with a black fineliner pen, a pencil and a marker placed along the right edge.

The fineliner had run dry halfway through the second leaf, so I borrowed the red marker from the kitchen drawer and told myself nobody would look that closely at a rose.

Maureen had brought me a handkerchief from her mother's trunk, cream cotton gone the colour of weak tea, and a scrap sketch on the back of a seed catalogue. She wanted the lace to show through the petals the way it had shown through her mother's gloves at the chapel in 1961. I pencilled the bloom first, a loose cup that opened like a question, then pressed the lace pattern beneath it with tracing paper until the scallops looked hand-stitched.

The wedding was on a Saturday in June, in a church hall that smelt of floor polish and wet umbrellas. Maureen had the drawing pinned to a corkboard beside the urn, and people kept stopping to ask who had done it. I said a woman who couldn't draw a straight line without a ruler, which was true. Her granddaughter, the bride, laughed and tucked the sheet into the front of the hymn book she was carrying, as if it were a second bouquet.

Afterwards Maureen gave me the paper back, creased and smudged with a thumbprint of pink. Across the bottom, in careful biro, she had written: for the next one. It still lives in my drawer, the pencil lines gone soft, and the rose is still holding its shape.
