Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing of a dreamcatcher-style design with a central web of looping lines and beads. Feathers hang from the base, and small five-petal flowers sit around the edge, with the words Hope, Love, Family, Dream and Believe written in script along the arc above. The linework is light grey pencil on white paper, with no colour, and the design is centred on the page with a hand visible at the lower left edge.

The dance hall at Tennick Cross had a floor of pitch pine that sprang under your feet, and every Saturday Mara Lowry swept it before the fiddlers came. Some nights he said the floor was the only thing in the parish that still told him the truth.

One February a traveller came in off the Hexham road with a canvas bag and a bundle of feathers tied to a willow hoop. He asked for a bed and a fire, and in exchange he hung the hoop over the door. Mara thought it foolish, a bit of old-fashioned charm, but he said it would catch whatever the young people brought in on their boots, the worries and the sour talk, and let the good things through. Her father asked him to make one for the stove. The traveller wove a web of cord and beads, looping lines crossing at the middle like the petals of a flower, and tied five small blooms along the rim.

In March the traveller left before dawn, and the hoop stayed behind. Mara noticed that the words he had burned into the willow were gone by the morning, rubbed away by the warmth of the stove, except for the ones she could still read when the light came through the window: hope, love, family, believe. Her father put his hand on the hoop and smiled, and Mara danced with him on the pitch pine floor until the fiddler gave up.
