The wind took the hoop off its nail again this morning, so I've knotted it to the back gate with garden twine and left it there to think about what it's done. Dad's old dreamcatcher, the one you swore was a bird trap. Its web has gone grey with a summer of rain, and two of the feathers are missing, though a magpie has been strutting around the bean rows with something suspicious in its beak.

Mrs Okafor next door says the web catches the bad dreams and lets the good ones fall through the middle, which is nonsense, but I've started sleeping on the side nearest the window anyway. Last night I dreamt of the greenhouse with every pane lit from inside, and this morning there was a spider sitting dead centre of the web, neat as a stitch, mending the hole where the gale had torn it.

I didn't have the heart to clear her away. I sat on the step with my tea and watched her work for an hour, pulling each thread tight against the hoop, as if she had all the time in the world and nobody had told her the season was ending.

So I'm writing to ask whether you'll come up at Christmas and help me take the thing down before the frost. Or leave it up. You'll know which. I've put the kettle on and I'm going out to see whether she's finished.
