Dreamcatcher tattoo with feathers on the upper back
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
A large dreamcatcher with a woven web, a central hoop containing an eight-pointed star, and three hanging feathers with teal beads. The feathers are shaded in black and grey with fine detail on the barbs, and the web is drawn with crisp linework. Two blurred physical dreamcatchers hang on a grey wall in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Marjorie had been mending the same Victorian collar for three weeks when Tom Abernethy came into the shop on Kirkgate with a hoop of bent willow under one arm. He asked whether she could make it catch something. She told him the shop sold lace, not nets. He said the web had to be fine enough to hold one particular thing and loose enough to let everything else go.

She wove it on a Tuesday, white thread drawn taut across the willow, and at its centre she set an eight-pointed star, counting each point aloud so the tension would stay even. Three jackdaw feathers, dark as wet slate, hung from the base with blue glass beads threaded near their tips. Tom watched her tie the last knot and asked what he was supposed to catch. She said that was his business, not hers.
He hung it above the back door of a terrace in Holbeck, where the wind came through the yard at night. Three months later he returned with the hoop and nothing in it. The web was grey with dust, and one point of the star had gone slack. He held it up to the window and said, pleased, that the wind must have been through. Marjorie took it from him and turned it until the light fell through every gap at once, and she thought the net had done exactly what nets do, which is to let nearly everything go.
