Howling wolf dreamcatcher on upper back
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
A wolf with its head raised in a howl sits inside a circular dreamcatcher with a radiating web pattern. Three feathers and strings of beads hang below and beside the hoop, with small dots scattered around the wolf. The wolf is shaded in black and grey with bold outlines, while the small beads are teal, and the photo is taken from behind, centred on the upper back.

The wolf had come down to the edge of Ashcombe in the last week of frost, and nobody in the village would say why. Old Mab Wrenfield said it was grieving. Her grandson said it was hungry. Tamsin, who kept the sheep on the slope above the wood, said nothing at all, because every evening at dusk it climbed to the hollow oak and sat with its head flung back, and it howled until the dogs in the valley gave up and only the owls answered.

The howl did not sound sad to her, not exactly. It sounded like someone calling a name across a long distance and expecting an answer. She took a hoop of ash that her father had bent for a sieve and strung it with sinew, the way he had taught her, weaving the web from the centre outwards so the threads ran like the spokes of a wheel. Into the lower loops she knotted three grey feathers from the crows that roosted in the mill, and between them she threaded beads of blue-green glass, the colour of the pond in July. She hung it on the gatepost at the top of the hollow path.
On the third night the wolf came down the path and stopped at the gate. It sniffed the hoop, then the feathers, then the beads, and its breath clouded and drifted through the web. Tamsin watched from the other side of the gate without moving. When the wolf lifted its head, the howl that came out was short and low, and it no longer sounded like a call but like something being set down. The wolf turned and padded back up the slope into the trees.
In the morning one feather was gone from the hoop, and Mab's grandson swore the wolf had taken it for its own. Tamsin did not argue. She walked up to the oak with the flock, and there in the frost were the prints of four large paws heading away from the village, the back pair sinking a little deeper than the front, as if the animal were carrying something it had finally been given.
