Dreamcatcher with flowers on upper back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A dreamcatcher hoop with a fine woven web sits at the centre, with three feathers and beads hanging from its base. Several flowers and curling vine-like swirls with small dots extend up and to the right of the hoop, with a flower also near the left edge. Shading is black and grey, with soft gradients on the feathers and sharp contrast in the web lines, set on bare skin across the upper back.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hoop had been hanging above Mirela's cot for nine winters, and in all that time the web in its centre had never torn, though the grey moths of the valley came to it every night like pilgrims. Her grandmother had woven it from horsehair and nettle thread, knotting each crossing with a bead of jet so that bad dreams would snag and stay, tangled until morning light burned them off like dew.

Feathers hung from the base: a pale owl's feather, a speckled grouse, and a long dark one from a crow that had walked into the kitchen the day the river flooded. Mirela counted them each evening, the way her grandmother had taught her, and each evening the count was three.

Then came the autumn the dreams stopped snagging. Nothing came through the web at all, not even the small grey ones about lost gloves and unpaid rent. Mirela lay awake listening to the wind rattle the hoop, and at last she understood the trouble: the web had grown so fine that it caught only the hungry dreams, and the hungry dreams had learned to keep away. She took down her grandmother's bone needle and began to add a thread of her own, one knot at a time, loosening the old pattern so that a few stray thoughts could wander in and out.

By the first frost the flowers had climbed the hoop and the vine had curled itself around the feathers. Her grandmother's kettle sat cold on the hob, and when Mirela finally slept she dreamed of an empty room with its door left open.
