Dreamcatcher with blue feathers on the ribs

Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A large dreamcatcher with a central circle and three smaller hoops hangs from a black line, with blue feathers trailing down and out to the left. The black outlines are fine and even, while the feathers are shaded in several tones of blue with soft gradients. Blue ink dominates the colour against the pale skin, and the design wraps down the side of the torso.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp at Scarrow Head had gone dark twice that winter, and both mornings Ada Penhallow found a feather on the gallery rail, blue as a kingfisher's back and wet with sea.

Her father said the gulls brought them. Her grandmother said the net-maker's widow up the cliff path had a hoop that caught bad weather before it reached the glass. Ada took a length of cord from the boat store and wove a ring from driftwood, knotting it tight the way she had watched the widow do. She strung three smaller rings beneath it on a single black line and hung the whole thing from a nail by the stair.

In February the fog came in thick as wool and the lamp burned steady through the night. No boat called out for help. At first light the web over the big ring was full of grey beads of cloud, and the feathers on the lower hoops had all been tugged out to the left, as though something had passed through and taken the heaviness with it.

Ada climbed the stair with her cold tea and found the top ring empty except for one blue quill. She tucked it into her collar and kept it there. The keeper's log for that week says only: light steady, fog heavy, nothing lost.
