Back · Mixed · Photo

Two stylised dragon heads face each other, their necks and wings forming a heart shape, with a knotwork panel and tapering tail below. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Okafor's stall was always the last to pack up on a Saturday, mostly because nobody wanted to be the one wrestling the tarpaulin in the wet. I had sold secondhand tools under that tin roof for eleven years, and in all that time the two iron dragons bolted to the gatepost at the end of our row had never once looked away from each other.

They were cast by Halloran's grandfather in a foundry above the canal in Halifax, and they had come to the market with the stall and a box of rusted hinges. Their necks curled up until the heads met in a point, and the wings rose on either side of them like a hand held open. Halloran, who sold clocks two pitches down, said they looked like they were about to bite each other. He wanted them turned to face the car park. I said a gate was a gate and it could face what it liked, and we went on like that every week until the paint on their flames had quite gone.

The storm came in on a Tuesday night, when I had stayed late to count the float. I found Halloran standing in the rain beside the gatepost with a tin of blue enamel and a brush he had clearly bought for the job. He did not say anything about the dragons. He just dipped the brush and began on the tail of the nearer one, and after a moment I held the lamp steady for him. The water ran off the knotwork panel in thin silver lines and dripped from the tips of the flames into the gutter, pale blue where the paint had not yet dried.
