Dreamcatcher with feathers across upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A dreamcatcher with a web of fine circular lines, beads and a small flower at its upper right, with three feathers and a small secondary hoop hanging below. Beaded chain-like strands arc from the hoop across both shoulder blades. The linework is delicate and the feathers have light shading, all in grey ink on a bare upper back.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every autumn the Marrow fair pitched on the common below Heddle Wood, and every autumn old Hester Quill sat in her caravan with a hoop of ash wood across her knees, winding grey thread round and round it until the web was tight enough to hold a sparrow. Her son had gone down to the coast and never come back, and she said nothing of it, only wove.

The children of the fair knew the story of the web. If you slept near the caravan, the web would catch your dreams before they could slip out of your head and go wandering over the hedges. Beads of jet and blue glass hung from the lowest ring to weigh the strings down. Three feathers, one crow and two gulls, dangled beneath like the tail of a kite that had given up on the wind.

One night in September a girl called Nell Partridge, who ran off from the carousel whenever her uncle shouted, climbed the caravan steps and asked whether her dreams could be sent to the sea. Hester did not look up from her weaving. "Dreams go where they are caught," she said, "and where they are caught they stay. Sit down and tell me yours, then we'll see what's worth sending."

Nell told her about the boat she meant to build, and the coast she meant to reach in it. Hester drew one silver bead onto the web and tied it off with a double knot. In the morning the caravan was gone, leaving a ring of flattened grass on the common, and a single grey feather lay on the bottom step where the girl had sat.
