The ink on the coastline has run again, and you are the one who must scrape it back with the edge of a bone knife before the varnish sets. Master Oduya said the sea always wins a map in the end, so draw it as if it were already gone. Upstairs the shutters rattle. Someone is hammering a barrel hoop in the yard, and the sound comes through the floor like a slow pulse.

Three weeks ago a woman with salt in her hair came up the quay carrying a hoop of willow bent into a ring, with a net of thread strung across it. Grey and brown feathers hung from its base, and she tied a brass compass to one cord and a painted disc to another. She wanted the whole known world drawn inside the ring, but she could not pay in coin. She paid in pieces: twelve carved walnut shapes, each cut to the outline of a coast she had walked. You fitted them into the margins yourself, one at each corner of the sheet, and the master said nothing while you did it.

Now the sheet is finished and the master is dead of a fever, and the woman has not come back for her net. You hold the hoop up to the lamp. Through its loops the world looks smaller, and every feather that trembles on its string throws a thin shadow across Africa and the Indies, as though something is still being sorted.

You roll the map tight and leave the compass with the harbour clerk. Tomorrow you sail for the island where the coastlines end. You take the walnut piece shaped like a bay you know and slip it into your pocket.
