You'll laugh, but the new night baker has hung a dreamcatcher over the proving cupboard, two of them, one hooped on top of the other, with a grey feather wound through the lower ring. Mr Okonkwo says his nan made them in Lagos for every child who couldn't sleep. I told him the damp in here would rot the string. He said the string has outlived worse.
The shop goes quiet about four, when the ovens are the only thing talking. Last Tuesday a feather came loose and drifted down through the steam off the tray of cobs, turned twice in the air, and settled on the cooling rack beside the sourdough. Nobody had put it there. Pearl swept it into her palm and wanted to bin it, but I took it off her and pressed it into the day's ledger, where it still is.
There's a chalkboard by the back door now too, in his square capitals: MEMENTO MORI, and underneath, MEMENTO VIVERE. Remember you will die, remember to live. I thought it morbid until I watched him, floury to the elbow, humming over the first batch, slashing each loaf with one neat dip of the blade as if he had all the time in the world.
Come before six on Sunday and see for yourself. The dough will be rising and the feather will still be in the ledger.
