The hoar frost has held in the lower field for six days, so the ewes are huddled by the barn and I've been up since four with the kettle. Dad's hands are worse. He pretends they aren't, but he couldn't tie the baler knot this morning and I had to do it while he stood watching the sky like it owed him money.

Mum's dreamcatcher is still hanging over the kitchen window. I took it down to dust the web and found a feather caught in the lowest hoop, grey with a brown bar, the quill split near the tip. I don't know how it got there. That window's been shut since October. I've put it in the envelope with this letter so you have something of ours that isn't a cheque.

She always said the web catches the bad dreams and lets the good ones slip through the middle. I thought that was daft when I was small. Now I lie awake counting the knots in it, the way she did, and I think she was mostly making sure we slept.

Come home for the lambing if you can. Bring the teal beads you promised, the ones for the little hoop. The sheep don't mind whether you come, but I do.
