Dripping skull with music note

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

A realistic, three-quarter view skull with a black musical note shape across its forehead. Dark drips run from the eye sockets, nasal cavity and teeth, with droplets falling below the jaw. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft highlights on the bone and deep shadows in the sockets, set against a pale grey textured background.

Ada Pell had tuned the upright in the Harbour Street chapel for thirty-one years, and in all that time the old instrument had never once gone silent on a Sunday. So when the middle A stopped answering her fork, she sat back on the stool and listened to the damp come off the walls instead.

She went looking for the cause the way her father had taught her, by taking things apart. The hammers were sound. The strings were sound. Only when she lifted the fallboard did she find the black stuff, thick as treacle and smelling of pitch, running from the keys in slow beads and pooling in the dark of the case. It had the shine of wet ink, and it had no business being there.

Her brother Tom said it was the sexton's lamp oil, or a rat that had crawled in and died. Ada said nothing. She had seen drops like it before, on the yellowed keys of the harmonium at her mother's funeral, and had never told anyone how the hymns that week had come out flat and grey, like something drowning in a pond.

On the last night of the month she set a single bowl beneath the case and sat with her ear to the wood. The drip fell, slow as a metronome, and somewhere beneath it a note rose to meet the sound. She wrote it down on the back of a coal bill. It was the one the old hymnal had never printed, the one that sounded like a door closing in an empty house. In the morning the bowl was full and the chapel smelled of sweet tar and cold brass, the piano played perfectly, and Ada did not touch it again.
