Skull with stiletto heels

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A bold black ink drawing of a human skull with a pair of stiletto heels, one resting on top of the skull and one standing separately at the lower right, with thin outlined legs rising behind them. The skull and shoes are outlined in heavy line with solid black areas and small white highlights, while the legs are drawn in fine single lines. The design sits on a plain pale background with the subject placed centrally and slightly off balance.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The skull on my uncle's bench had come out of a surgeon's cabinet years before it reached us, and he never let me dust it with a rag, only a soft brush. It sat among the heel-block tins and the bottle of contact cement, grinning at the door. Customers took it for a joke. Miss Vane did not. She came in on a wet Thursday with a pair of black stilettos in a carrier bag and set them on the counter as though they might bite.

'The left heel's gone,' she said. 'Make it right by Saturday. I'm dancing at the Pier Hotel.' Uncle Tobias turned the shoe over, tapped the tip with his thumbnail and said the leather was too fine to save. 'Then make me another,' she said, 'one that stands on its own.' I had never seen him refuse a job, but he took her deposit and wrote her name on the card in capitals.

On Saturday she did not come. Instead a boy from the fish market brought a note folded in wax paper: keep the heels, I have no further use for them. Uncle Tobias read it twice, then lifted the skull and balanced one of the new heels on its crown, the way a man sets a cup on a saucer. It held. 'Good balance is the whole trade,' he said. I thought he meant the shoe.

On Monday the bell over the door rang at closing time, and a pair of shoes had been pushed through the letterbox. The heel tips were freshly sharpened and the soles were already scuffed from walking on wet pavement. We never learned who had worn them. Uncle Tobias set them on the bench beside the skull, and there they stayed, the jaw hanging open as if it had something to add.
