Dreamcatcher with three feathers
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A dreamcatcher drawn in black outline on a white background, with a circular hoop enclosing a looping, flower-like web pattern and a central dot. Three feathers hang from the base, each filled with swirling, scroll-like linework. The composition is centred and symmetrical, with uniform line weight and no shading.

Item 4471, received Tuesday: a wire hoop about the width of a side plate, strung with a web of looping thread so fine the light came through it in pieces. Three feathers hung from its base on loops of cord, grey-brown, each one scrolled down the vane as if someone had written a letter in its margin. Nobody had claimed it from the shelf at Crewe in eleven weeks, so the tag was mine to write.

Our shelf is mostly umbrellas and phone chargers. People arrive with their lost things still in their heads, not their hands. They describe something that is sort of a bag and sort of a bird. I learned to ask what they had been dreaming on the train. Nobody ever answers that. A man from Stoke once told me he had lost a whole night's sleep, and I wrote it on the form under Other.
In the twelfth week I carried the hoop to the window and held it up against the platform lamps. The web opened into a flower, petal after petal, and the centre was a brass bead worn smooth by somebody's thumb. I thought about the nights it must have hung over a bed, catching whatever drifted in, and how the feathers would have stirred every time a door opened down the hall.
On Friday a woman in a green coat stood at the counter asking after a grey item she could not quite describe. I did not tell her I had it. I asked what she had been dreaming, and she said a train that never stopped at her station. I untied the hoop from its tag and handed it across with the form still blank. She signed for it under Other.
