Dear Marnie,

The tide took the circus boat last Tuesday, and the elephant came ashore on Inchcarron wrapped in a wet blanket with a brass bell still tied to one ankle. Mr Dacre says her name is Pim, though the handbills said Juno. She won't stand while anyone is watching, so she sits on the shingle with her trunk raised like a precentor waiting for the congregation to find its note.

The islanders have been kind in the way islanders are: suspicious for a week, then leaving buckets of turnips by the dyke without a word. Old Ewan Gair, who hasn't spoken to the minister since the harvest of 1987, carried a bale of hay up the brae on his back. I told him he'd put his hip out, and he said a hip was a small price for a creature that had crossed the sea to find us.

Every evening Pim lifts her trunk and gives a long, low note, and three grey birds rise off the rocks, circle her twice, and settle again on the wall. Dacre says they're kittiwakes and that she thinks they're her calves, which I don't believe, but I've started leaving a bucket of fresh water where the evening light falls on it, so she has something to look at besides the sea.

The ferry's due Thursday to take her across to Oban. Would you come out on the early boat and walk her down the jetty with me? I can't do it on my own without crying, and she'd know. Bring the good bread. Don't tell Dacre I asked.

Yours, Isla
