Cat with hearts and paw prints on ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A grey tabby cat with closed eyes, whiskers and a curled tail sits above the ankle, with three small red hearts floating above its head. A trail of black paw prints runs down the foot and across the top of the heel. The cat is drawn with fine, clean outlines and soft grey shading, while the hearts are solid red, and the piece sits against plain pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tabby came up the lane the week the herring boats were late, and Mrs Pengelly fed her on the back step before she thought to ask whose she was. Nobody claimed her. The lodgers at the boarding house named her Hearth, and she slept at the foot of Mr Tregear's bed, purring so loudly he swore she was a kettle coming to the boil.

Every morning there were paw prints across the scrubbed flagstones, small and damp with sea salt, running from the kitchen out to the cliff path. Mrs Pengelly swept them up twice and gave up on the third day. The old women in the village said a cat who leaves prints is marking a road home, and that a house with a road through it should keep its door unbolted.

In October the prints stopped at the harbour wall. Mr Tregear walked the quay for a week, calling her name to the gulls. On the Sunday, a grey boat came in with a tabby asleep on the coil of rope by the bow, and the skipper said she had walked aboard at Newlyn and would not be moved.

Mrs Pengelly left the back door open every night after that. Each spring, the little prints came back up the step in the dew, always walking towards the house.
