Elephant and lotus on upper arm

Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large elephant head with raised trunk fills the upper arm, with a lotus-style mandala flower behind its head. Bold black outlines define the elephant, while fine internal linework and ornamental swirls add detail to its face and ear. Stippled dotwork shading along the lower edge gives depth, and the design is entirely in black ink and grey tones.

The master gave me the dotwork because my hand was too unsteady for clean lines. "Stone remembers every blow," he said, tapping the grey slab with his mallet, "so give it only the blows you mean." The elephant was to rise from the gate of the river temple, its head bowed beneath a lotus that opened like a cupped palm.

For forty days I worked the shadow along the lower edge, pricking tiny holes with a copper point until the stone looked damp at dusk. The mahout's son came each morning with figs and sat on the step to watch. He told me the elephant in the stables, Kesara, would lower her head for no one but him, and that our carving must do the same, or the gods would think we had mocked them.

On the last evening I found a hairline crack running through the fine swirls above the ear, where river damp had seeped into the wall. I could have smoothed it away, but I cut the ornament deeper and let the crack become a current curling into the spiral. The master walked the length of the gate in silence, pressed his thumb into the dots, and said nothing, which from him was praise.

At first light the mahout's son hauled the rope that raised the last block of the trunk into place. The sun caught the lotus petals and threw the elephant's shadow across the water, and for a moment the dots gleamed like rain. He looked up at the head, then at me, and tipped his cap as if it were the elephant who had done the work.
