Ornate elephant head on a thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A front-facing elephant head fills most of the frame, with its tusks, trunk and ears decorated with ornamental patterns such as scalloped mandala shapes, scrolls and a lotus-like motif on the forehead. The linework is bold and outlined, and the shading is built from stippled dots, giving the ears and forehead a textured, tonal look. The tattoo is in black and grey on a bare thigh, with denim visible at the left edge of the photo.

You have catalogued the lost property at Harrowgate Junction for eleven years, and you know the sound a case makes when it has been opened by someone who did not expect to be asked for a ticket. The brass elephant came in on a Tuesday, wrapped in a tea towel printed with lighthouses, and it was heavier than it looked. Its forehead carries a lotus worked in tiny dots, and its ears are scalloped like the lace on a christening gown.

Nobody claims it. You log it, shelve it between an umbrella and a box of unmatched gloves, and wait for a form that never comes. Instead, each Friday, a different passenger asks at the window whether anything has been handed in with a trunk. You tell them no. They nod as if they expected that, then leave by the north exit, where the rain collects in the old ironwork.

In March you find a folded note pushed under the tea towel, written in pencil: Keep it dry. It only answers to the 7.42. You check the timetable. The 7.42 was withdrawn before you started here. You put the kettle on and look at the elephant for a long time, at the dots that catch the light like seed heads, until the tannoy crackles and the whole station, for one minute, behaves as if the old train still runs.

On the Friday after, a woman in a green coat stands at the north exit with her hands in her pockets. You carry the elephant out to her through the drizzle. She turns it over, runs her thumb along one scalloped ear, and says nothing at all. Behind her, on a platform that has been fenced off since the eighties, a single carriage light comes on.
