Watercolour elephant head on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a front-facing elephant head with large ears, a raised trunk and tusks, drawn with loose dark outlines and soft, bleeding fills. Colour washes of blue, orange, yellow, purple and green run into and beyond the outline, with splatter marks spreading around the design. The elephant sits centrally on the upper arm, photographed against a dark top and a background of dark furniture.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain has been falling on the dye vats since before light, and you are the only one in Holm Edge still awake to stir them. Your aunt Ruth left the ledger open on the bench with its last entry half finished: blue, two measures, for the Harrow boy's shirt. You do not yet know that the forest is walking towards the village.

It comes out of the alders at the bottom of the lane, slow and grey as wet slate, and it is larger than the mill wheel. Its ears are spread open like sails, and the great head swings low enough that you can see the bone of its tusks, still unpainted, the colour of paper. Where its feet touch the mud, the ground blooms orange, then yellow, then a green that runs down the hedgerows like spilt paint from a careless brush.

You lift the stirring paddle, because it is the only thing in your hands. The elephant raises its trunk and breathes a fine violet mist over the vats, and the blue in the water rises to meet it. Ruth always said the colours were too bright to keep in jars. That night every pot in the village goes over the wall, and the shutters of Holm Edge open one by one on gardens that have never looked so loud.

By morning the elephant is back among the alders, a patchwork of wet colour against the dark trunks. You find the ledger on the bench and, beneath the Harrow boy's order, write a new line in your own hand: one elephant, returned, its tusks left white.
