Elephant with feather headdress in a diamond

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

The subject is an elephant head in three-quarter view, wearing a red ornate headdress with a teal gem, a teal feather plume and beaded tassels hanging at the sides. The elephant's skin is shaded in soft grey with bold dark outlines, and the design sits inside an orange diamond framed by a teal border. The palette of red, orange, teal and grey gives a bold, decorative composition.

The rain has found the gap under your awning again, so you lift the bolts of silk off the trestle one at a time and stack them on the crate marked FRAGILE, which is a joke only you find funny. Along the row the fishmonger is shouting prices nobody is paying, and the man who sells phone cases has given up and sits on an upturned bucket with his hood pulled tight.

The old woman arrives at half past two with a carrier bag and no umbrella. She unwraps a feather plume the colour of a kingfisher, stitched to a red felt pad with a teal glass stone, and sets it on your counter like a bird that has fallen asleep mid-flight. 'Fair stock,' she says. 'From the years the elephants still came to the square. My father rode the big grey one, Mabel, and when she died they gave him her headdress and nothing else.'

You don't ask what she wants for it. You have heard her name the same price to three other stallholders since spring, and the number is never money. She wants someone to carry the thing out of the wet. You lift the plume, and the tassels knock together with a sound like a small crowd clapping somewhere far off.

By six the market is emptying and the drains gurgle under the paving. You fold the felt pad into your coat, and under the streetlight the stone catches the last orange light, bright as a diamond someone meant to be looked at. Behind you her stall stands bare, and it occurs to you that she walked off into the rain without opening the umbrella she never brought.
