Realistic elephant with mandala on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A large elephant head faces forward at the centre of the design, shaded in soft greys with fine texture on the skin folds and tusks. Behind it, bright multicoloured mandala and paisley motifs in pink, orange, green, teal and yellow fill the surrounding area. The photograph is taken close up, cropped to the thigh and upper leg with the wearer's denim shorts at the top edge.

It was gone three when Ruth finished the obs round on Bay Four and found Kit still awake, the bedside lamp turned to its lowest setting and a library book lying face down on the blanket. "You're not reading that," she said. "I'm reading the pictures," he said, holding up the cover, where a grey elephant stood with a ring of painted flowers behind its head.

She pulled the chair close and tucked her cardigan round her knees. "Do you want the story my gran told me?" Kit nodded, so she told him about Meera, an elephant who carried the bride's gifts through a town where the monsoon always came late. Every spring the women of the lane dipped their hands in the dye vats and pressed them to the walls, and the walls bloomed in pink and green and teal, the paisley curling like ferns. Meera stood still while the old painter worked the swirls over her forehead, and she learned to hold her breath for the cool brush strokes.
Ruth told him how, the year the rains failed, the vats cracked and the lane went grey, and Meera stood by the dry well with nothing to wear. The children gathered what they could: beetroot water, crushed sloes, a pinch of turmeric saved from somebody's kitchen. They painted her ears and her trunk and the curls around her tusks until she looked like a festival under a dull sky. When the rain finally came it washed most of it away, but the children swore the colour had soaked into the creases of her skin, and that was why her wrinkles looked like lace.
Kit's eyelids were heavy. "Is it true?" "Every word, if you're asking a nurse at four in the morning." He smiled and pulled the blanket to his chin. Ruth turned the lamp down another notch and left the book open on the elephant's face, where the painted flowers caught the corridor light and held it a moment longer than they needed to.
