Realism colour tattoo of an adult elephant and calf walking through green grass across a man's upper arm.

Elephant family on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

An adult elephant walks forward towards the viewer, with a smaller calf beside it on the left. The shading is soft and detailed, with wrinkled skin, tusks and ears rendered in tones of brown and grey. A loose wash of green grass and a pale sky sit behind the animals, and the composition wraps around the outer upper arm.

Rain had come early that year, and the stems stood taller than the calves.

The little one came last, as they always did, its trunk swinging like a rope that had forgotten what it was for. Its ears were too big for its head and it kept stopping to pull at a tuft it had no interest in eating. The big cow at the front did not look back. Nyambura had seen herds leave a straggler to the hyenas, and she braced herself for it, but the matriarch simply stopped, turned her great grey body around and waited, shifting her weight from foot to foot.

When the calf reached her, she lowered her head and touched its back with the tip of her trunk, once, the way Nyambura's grandmother used to press a palm between a child's shoulders to say walk on. The calf stepped into the shade of her legs and they went on together, slow and unhurried, towards the water. Nyambura finished her tea. It had gone cold and bitter, and she drank it anyway, watching the two shapes shrink against the pale sky until they were only a line of dust that the wind took too.
