Elephant family walking across upper back
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two adult elephants and three smaller calves walking left to right in a single line across the upper back. The forms are built from fine stippled dots and short strokes, giving soft shading to the skin, bodies and trunks. The work is in black and grey only, and the group is centred horizontally on the back with plenty of clear skin around it.

The lift in Kestrel House has been dead since March, so you take the stairs with Mr Okafor's shopping hooked on one arm and his tin of pencils tucked under the other. He lives on the eleventh floor now, and he insists you look at the drawings before you put the bags down. Every sheet is covered in dots, thousands of them, pressed so fine you have to lean in to see that they are animals at all.

"Elephants walk like that," he says, tapping a sheet where four grey shapes cross the paper in a line. "The old one at the front, the young ones in the middle, and the strong ones at the back where nobody can get at them." You say you always thought they walked in circles when they were frightened. He laughs, a dry sound, and says that is what people believe when they have never been further than a car park.
The calendar by his door has circles drawn on the first Sunday of every month, and you realise he has been counting. His daughter moved to Leeds two years ago and rings when she remembers. He asks if you will come back on Thursday, and you say yes before you have decided to.
Going down, you count the landings out loud, the way you used to follow your uncle along the seafront when you were small. You keep the rhythm steady and even, so that anyone walking behind you could match their feet to the sound and not lose the way.
