Ornate elephant on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large elephant faces forward across the outer thigh, with its head, ears, trunk and legs filled with dense decorative patterns of dots, scallops and leaf-like shapes. The tusks and parts of the head and trunk are shaded to give a soft, three-dimensional effect against the ornamental linework. The tattoo is in black and grey ink, and the photograph is taken at an angle with the person wearing black shorts and a gym-like room behind.

The bakers of Lampwick Lane said the elephant came down from the hills every night the frost was hard, and that it never once tracked snow into the ovens. Old Mabel Quarrie kept the bread shop at the bottom of the lane, and she had a rule about the back door: leave it on the latch, leave a tray of day-old crusts on the step, and never, under any circumstances, ask it why it had come.

Her grandson Tobias did not believe in the elephant. He believed in the flour sacks, which were lighter each morning than they should have been, and in the loaves that rose twice as high as his grandmother's recipe allowed. So one January he sat up in the dark with a candle and a rolling pin, and when the latch lifted at half past three he did not run. He only stood very still while the great grey head came through the doorway, ornamented from crown to tusk with rings and scallops like a page of a lace book, and the trunk curled in the air to sniff the cooling racks.
The animal looked at him with one small eye, bright as a coin. Tobias said, because it seemed the polite thing, that the crusts were on the step. The elephant's trunk unfurled toward the boy and then, with great care, toward the jar of starter on the shelf, which it lifted and set down again without spilling a drop.
By the time Mabel came down in her slippers the elephant was gone, and the back step was bare. Tobias was asleep against the flour bin with a loaf in his lap. It had risen in the shape of a head, with two ears spread wide, and it did not fall.
