Elephant and calf on the back of the neck

Realism · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph taken from behind, showing a tattoo of an adult elephant walking with a much smaller calf beside it. The elephants are drawn with soft shading and fine detail in the skin folds, legs and ears. The tattoo sits low on the neck, centred in the frame, with the rest of the composition filled by the subject's hair and a blurred background.

Nobody had told Ada Pim that the calf would walk the whole way from Thetford to Wisbech, but by the second night Bess had decided it, and the rest of us had learned to get out of the road. The big cow set her feet down slowly on the wet verge, one after another, while the little one kept its trunk tucked against her flank, touching her every few steps as if counting her.

We had three wagons strung out behind them, lamps swinging, and Fred Oakes cursing the tyre he'd split outside Downham. Ada walked at the head with a bucket of windfall apples on her hip. She said the calf had been born in a barn with the doors shut because the wind wouldn't let up, and that it had stood before anyone could stop it and wobbled straight at the man with the shovel. Nobody else on the show could say it so fondly, but she did.

At Outwell the fog came down thick off the dykes and we lost the lamps. I remember the sound more than the sight: the soft pad of feet on tarmac, and Bess breathing out long through her nose, slow as a bellows, so we knew where she was and walked towards it. The calf's steps came after, quick and uneven, and every so often a squeak.

We reached the field at dawn with the grass gone silver and the sky paling over the church tower. Bess lowered herself to her knees with a groan, and the calf folded down beside her, pressed close. Ada tipped the apples out in the grass and didn't say anything, and nor did any of us. There was nothing else to be said about it.
