The removal van stopped at the end of Cable Street at ten past two, and the driver was the first to see them: an old cow elephant and a calf no taller than a wardrobe, walking in the middle of the road as if the tarmac had been laid for them. You were the only one awake on the night shift at the bottom of the street, so it fell to you to walk up and ask whether they were lost.

The cow did not look lost. She turned her great grey head towards the bus shelter, then towards the chip shop with its shutter half down, and the calf pressed against her flank the way a child keeps close in a crowd. Her ears moved slowly, like sails on a slack afternoon. You had worked nights for nineteen years and never once been asked for directions by something that could have lifted your car.
You walked beside them to the canal bridge. Nobody spoke. The streetlamps made their shadows long and soft, and the calf kept stopping to touch the railings with the tip of its trunk, and each time the cow waited for it without fuss. At the bridge she lowered her head towards the black water, drank for a long while, and then looked back at you as if you had been the one who led them there.
When the first milk float came over the hill at five, the road was empty except for two faint prints in the wet, one large and one small, walking side by side towards the river.
