Mother and calf elephants on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black outline tattoo shows an adult elephant walking to the right with a smaller calf beside it at the left, the calf's trunk curled towards the adult's. The linework is thin and single weight with no shading or fill, leaving the skin tone visible inside the outlines. The tattoo sits on the inner wrist against a blurred background of green leaves and red flowers.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The menagerie boat came in on the morning tide, low and grey, and by eleven the whole of Porthlowen had crowded onto the harbour wall to watch the elephants come down the ramp. My mother said I was too old to climb the bollards. I climbed them anyway, because the elephant at the back of the line was smaller than the others, and she was holding her trunk up over her shoulder the way I'd seen my little brother do when he wanted to be carried.

Her name was Dolly, the keeper told me, and the calf was Pip, though nobody had told Pip. Dolly walked with her great grey head low and her ears folded, never once looking at the crowd. Pip kept close against her flank, and every few steps the small trunk unfurled and curled round her mother's, tip to tip, like two people holding hands in the dark. The gulls went quiet. Even the pilot stopped shouting about the lines.

My father drowned off the Stack eleven winters back, and nobody on this quay has said his name aloud since, not even in the chandlery where he used to sign for paraffin. I hadn't meant to think of him. But I watched Pip's trunk find its place again each time the calf stumbled on the wet cobbles, and I thought how a boy might keep hold of something without ever being told to.

When the procession reached the field behind the Ship Inn, the keeper unhooked the chain and Dolly stood still while Pip wandered off to chase a gull. Then the calf came trotting back, and without looking, Dolly lifted her trunk and wrapped it once around her child's. I walked home the long way, past the empty slipway, and for the first time in years I did not count the boats.
