Elephant head with dotwork mandala design
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A pen drawing of an elephant head wearing an ornate crown, with a small symbol above its forehead and a curled trunk tip. Fine dotted shading fans out on either side of the head into a radiating mandala, with a dotted line through the centre and a drop shape hanging below. The design is in black ink on off-white paper, with faint pencil circles visible behind it.

The boats had gone out before light, twelve of them, and by mid-morning the sea lay flat and white as a plate. Old Ruth Cadell was mending net on the slip when the elephant came walking up out of the water. It wore a crown of beaten brass wedged between its ears, and a small mark like a seed was drawn above its brow. It stood among the upturned hulls as though it had been sent for. Nobody on the slip spoke. Ruth put down her needle.

The elephant asked for nothing. It lifted its trunk and curled the tip, slowly, the way a child tests a knot, then turned towards the open water where the fleet had gone. The men said afterwards that the sea around its legs went smooth in rings, and that the rings spread outward until they reached the boats. The boats came home on the next tide with full holds and every man aboard.
That evening Ruth went down to the water's edge with a jar of salt. On the wet sand where the animal had stood she found a single clear drop, shaped like a tear with a curl at its end. She wore it on a cord round her neck for forty years. When she died, her grandson took it to a jeweller in Cochin to sell. The jeweller would not buy it. He said it was still warm, and he handed it back with both hands.
