Hamsa hand with elephant and eye
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A hamsa hand outline frames an elephant at its centre, with an eye above and a dense mesh of dots, curls and fine hatching filling the palm and fingers. The linework is bold black on the outer edges and finer inside, with the patterning built up in dotwork and ornamental detail. The design is shown in black ink alone on a pale cream background, centred in the frame.

Sit closer, the lamp only lights one of us properly. Now. There was once a cloth merchant called Tomas Vell who kept a painted hand above his shop door, and in its palm stood an elephant so grey with dust that nobody remembered it had ever been any other colour. Under the trunk sat a single eye. Customers thought it was there to count their coins. It was there to watch the boy who swept the step.

The boy was called Ivo, and he was clever in the way hungry boys are clever. Each evening he waited until the shutters came down, then pressed his thumb to the eye and whispered the names of every bolt of silk he wished were his. The eye blinked once, slowly, and Ivo took that for permission. He began taking a length of blue every Friday, folded small inside his shirt, and every Friday the elephant shifted on its feet, the way a beast does before it lies down under a load.
Tomas did not shout. One morning he climbed the ladder with a pot of ink and a brush no thicker than a hair, and he began to fill the palm around the elephant with dots, curls and fine hatching, a thousand small marks that meant nothing to anyone but the eye. By the time he came down, the eye could no longer find Ivo's hand among them. The boy found the step swept, a folded blue cloth waiting on it, and the ink still wet.
That is the whole of it. Pass me the pan. The hand holds what it is given, and it gives back only what it sees, so mind what you look at when you come past that door at dusk.
