Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical mandala design drawn in black ink, with a central motif of layered petals, scrolls and a tapering point at the top. The design is shown in black linework on a plain white background with no colour.

The lamp had hung over the chart table since Madeira, and by the fortieth night Tobias Greaves could no longer look at it without wanting to take a file to its brass. Its lid was pierced in a pattern of petals and scrolls, and when the swell rolled the barque the pattern wheeled across the chart in pale shapes, like a tide of lace.

Mrs Ansell, the cook's widow who had bought passage as a stewardess, sat across from him with a string of beads in her lap. She had strung them at Gravesend, one bead for each day out, with a small silver crescent for every full moon. She said it kept her from fretting. Tobias said it kept her from sleeping. She laughed, a dry sound, and told him the sea did not care what either of them thought of its arithmetic.
On the forty-first night the cloud broke and the moon came through low over the port quarter. Tobias carried his sextant up the companionway and shot the lower limb against the horizon, his fingers numb, the reading trembling in the glass. When he came back down the lamp was swinging, and Mrs Ansell had already slid the beads along to the next crescent.
He worked the figures by lamplight until the sums came out even. They were fifteen miles west of where the log said they should be, and the land they were steering for was closer than anyone aboard had dared to hope. He did not tell her yet. He copied the corrected position onto the slate, and then, because it seemed the right thing to do, he threaded a spare silver moon onto her string and left it on the table beside her cup.
