Elephant in feathered headdress on a thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows an elephant's head wearing a feathered headdress with a beaded band and a dangling bead ornament, with a few flowers near the trunk. The linework is dark and defined, and the grey shading gives the face and feathers depth. The design fills the outer thigh and is framed by bare skin and the edge of a light-coloured garment.

Brother Anselm had been told the animal would be no trouble, which was what the carter said about everything, including the bridge at Ripon. The elephant stood in the lane outside the abbey gate with its trunk raised towards the bell tower, a headdress of dyed feathers nodding over its brow as if it had been asked to attend Vespers. Someone had hung a string of blue glass beads from the band, and they chimed against the wood of the cart whenever the beast shifted its weight.

The circus had gone bankrupt in Harrogate the previous autumn, and its owner had left the animal to the monks in lieu of wages owed. Abbot Peter read the letter twice, then sent for Anselm, who kept the kitchen garden and was thought to have the patience of a man who grew cabbages. The brothers argued over stable space. Anselm argued for the old tithe barn, where the roof was sound and the straw was dry, and he went out each morning with a bucket of windfall apples and a basket of marigolds cut from the bed by the wall.
The elephant did not care for the headdress. It shook its head until the feathers lifted, settled, then lifted again, and in the end Anselm unpicked the band and hung the feathers from a nail beside the barn door. The beads he kept. He threaded them on a length of cord and tied it to the post so the animal could hear them when it moved.
By the spring the gardeners were saying the beast had grown fond of the marigolds. Anselm found it at dusk one evening with a flower tucked behind one ear, the stem bent over, the petals still bright. He stood in the doorway for a long while and did not tell the abbot. Some things in a monastery were kept for their own sake.
