Elephant under an umbrella on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of an elephant silhouette, with its trunk raised to hold an open umbrella above it, sits on the outer ankle. The design is filled in solid black with a simple outline on the umbrella, and there is no shading or detail beyond the shapes. The plain skin and white background keep the focus on the small, centred motif.

The rain came to Morrow Basin every afternoon for forty years, and by the time the last of the old cities had sunk into the grey, the people had stopped minding it. The children of the basin grew up with their faces tipped to the sky and their hands always half raised, as if the weather were a guest they had agreed to host.

A woman named Ysolde kept the only dry shed in the lower market, and she mended umbrellas for a living. Her customers brought her ribs bent by wind and canopies torn by hail, and she straightened and stitched them until they opened like black flowers again. One afternoon a grey elephant walked up from the flooded road, its ears plastered flat, carrying nothing but a shallow tin bowl in its trunk. Nobody in the market had seen one before. Ysolde had only seen them in the faded picture books her grandmother kept under the counter.

The elephant lowered the bowl to her step and waited. She filled it with rainwater and it drank, then lifted its trunk and curled it around the handle of the nearest umbrella on the rack, a big green one with a broken spoke. It walked away with the umbrella held high above its own head, and it did not stop walking until the rain closed over the road behind it.

The next day, and the day after, the elephant came back and took another umbrella, and always it left the tin bowl behind. By the end of the month Ysolde had mended forty of them and stood them in rows at the edge of the road. Nobody ever saw the elephant bring one back. Some said it had carried them all the way to the dry hills, where the sky broke open in the evenings and the sun came through. Ysolde said nothing, and kept the bowl full.
