Elephant holding an umbrella on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black silhouette of an elephant with its trunk raised, holding a curved umbrella by a hooked handle above its head. The design uses bold filled shapes with no shading or fine detail, in black ink only. It sits on a light skin ankle against a white towel and yellow background, with the tattoo placed near the centre of the frame.

The elephant had been kept for thirty years by a fishmonger in Gdansk who had won her in a card game, and she had never once been allowed to lift her trunk above the stall. So when the rain came down on the harbour that November night, and the market lamps went out one by one, she simply lifted it. Nobody in the lanes saw her take the umbrella from the hook by the door. They only saw, later, that it was gone and that the fishmonger had been sleeping under his own coat.

She walked the wet cobbles at a slow, dignified pace, the umbrella held high by its crook, and the rain ran off the black silk in a neat ring around her. The gulls were asleep on the rooftops. A boy selling matches under the bridge stared at her and then, because he was seven and the hour was late, decided she was a good omen and gave her his last match. She tucked it under the handle and did not light it. She had no use for fire. She had only wanted to be dry while she thought.
What she thought about was the sea, which she had never been allowed to see except through the window of the back room. At the end of the quay she folded the umbrella with one long grey sigh, set it down on the stones like a lady leaving her gloves, and walked into the water until only her raised trunk showed. The boy found the umbrella at dawn, perfectly closed, and took it home. It never rained on his family again, though nobody could say whether that was the umbrella or the elephant.
