The men on the quay had a dozen theories about what the sea kept. Horns like wet driftwood curled from his brow, and he stood in the shallows with the patience of a debt.

My mother had always said the sea collected in people and the island paid it back in hard winters. So when the beast asked for a daughter of the house, I did not argue. I asked only for one day to walk the cliff path to the walled garden above Heddle's Cove, where a single rose had been flowering since before the lighthouse was built.

He did not keep me in chains. He kept me in a house of cold stone with a fire that never quite warmed the corners, and each evening he came in from the weather to sit across from me and say nothing at all. I learned to read that silence. It was the silence of a man who had waited a long time to be looked at without flinching. So I looked. His eyes were the colour of the bay before a storm, and they never once left my face.

On the last morning of the month I walked back up the cliff path and found the rose had opened in the night, its red petals pressed against the wall as if it had been trying to reach the sea. Below me the water lay flat and bright. The bull stood at the tideline, and he lifted his head, and I saw that the horns had gone soft at the tips, like something beginning to bloom.
