Sit closer, the lot of you, because the lamps on Canning Wharf have gone out and I am not shouting over the gulls. Now. There was a lamplighter called Tobias Crane who walked the quay every night with a pole and a tin of oil, and he had a habit of staring down into the black water whenever the tide went slack. People laughed at him. A man who watches the sea, they said, is waiting for a drowned sweetheart to come up for air.

One February the fog came in so thick that a ferry captain steered straight for the pilings. Tobias saw the hull lights swing toward the stone, and he did the only thing he could think of. He lifted his pole high over the water, arm stretched straight up like a man hailing a cab across the river, and he held it there until his shoulder burned. The ferry turned. Nobody aboard saw what stood on the quay beside him, only a dark shape against the lamp, long hair blown sideways, and a tail that sank into the shadow where the wharf met the tide.

Morning came and the fog lifted. Tobias was found asleep against a bollard with his arm still raised and the lamp cold in his fist. The harbourmaster wrote in his book that the lamplighter had taken a fit. But every night after, when the mist rolled up off the Mersey, the ferrymen swore they saw a woman's silhouette holding a light above the water, and they said she was waiting for someone to come home.
