Triptych of a black and grey elephant tattoo with red roses, a dahlia and a lotus on the lower leg, in a neo-traditional style with shading.

Elephant with roses and dahlia on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A large elephant in black and grey shading faces forward and in profile, decorated with ornamental patterns on its head, trunk and legs. Red roses, a dahlia and a lotus with pink petals surround the elephant, with a small teal wash behind the flowers. The three photographs show the same tattoo from front, left and right angles on a lower leg, with soft even lighting.

4 March, half three. The ovens have been warm since two and the flour has got into everything again, the rail, the rota book, the cuffs of my good cardigan. Nobody warns you that a bakery is a place where you talk to the dough more than to people. Ruth from the chandlers came in at quarter past asking for a bloomer, and I handed her a split tin instead, and she was too kind to say so.

The stamp lives in the second drawer, where Dev left it before he went back to Pondicherry for his sister's wedding and never came back to the counter. It is carved from teak, a squat elephant with its trunk curled over its head, and every inch of it is ringed with fine patterns like the lace on a christening gown. He pressed it into the Sunday shortbread so each round carried a small grey beast with a lotus between its ears. Customers asked what it meant. He said it was for luck and charged them nothing extra.

Tonight the stamp had gone sticky with old butter, so I scrubbed it with a nail brush, slowly, the way he showed me. When I pressed it into the first tray the elephant came up perfect, every ornament sharp. I piped pink roses beside it from a bag gone too soft, and set a dahlia of sugar paste from the cake shelf that nobody had bought. It looked like a wedding cake for a couple who had never once been to a wedding.

The first van will be outside by six. I expect to sell out by eight. I have not decided what to write to Dev, but I know I will tell him the shortbread still remembers the way. The last tray goes in with the sky still grey, and I press the stamp down once more, just to be sure.
