Ornamented elephant on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A large elephant walks towards the viewer, with its trunk hanging down, and an ornate headdress of orange, pink, blue and teal motifs. The body is rendered in grey shading with bold black outlines, while the coloured ornament adds contrast. A right-hand panel shows a close-up of the eye and surrounding ornament, with the same bold outlines and colour.

The hauler bots have stopped at the Arvel ridge, but the elephant has not. You have followed her for three days across the salt flats of what used to be a reservoir, her painted headdress flaring orange and teal through the heat haze. Nobody at Mandal Four remembers why the ornament was painted on her. The registry only says she was grown in a vat beneath the old zoo, and that her keepers once wore the lotus on their sleeves.

Her trunk swings low, reading the cracked ground the way the old maps once read rivers. You carry the pump, the ration tins and the transponder the council wants back before the rains, if rains come. Ruwan, the engineer, warned you not to let her near the cooling towers. She goes there anyway, leaning her forehead against a rusted gate until it gives, and inside the dome the air smells of wet concrete and something green.
Green. Ferns have pushed up through a drained pool, and she lowers her head to drink from a puddle the size of a dinner plate, one eye half closed, the painted ring around it bright as a signal lamp. You kneel beside her and see your own face swim on the water next to hers. Ruwan was wrong about the dome. It is not a trap. It is the first standing water she has found in nine years, and she has been walking towards it the whole time.
When she lifts her head, the transponder goes dead in your hand. You unclip it and set it in the ferns. Let the council come looking. Above the flats the sky is turning the colour of her headdress, and you have a pump, a tin of peaches and an elephant who knows where the water is.
