Ornate elephant head on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A front-facing elephant head fills the frame, wearing a feathered headdress and a forehead ornament with dangling beaded chains. The trunk curls down into a loop at the bottom, and the skin is shaded in soft greys with fine highlights on the tusks and ears. The tattoo sits on a forearm against a shiny silver background.

Dear Nadia,

The elephant came over the river at dawn, and I want you to know it was Bhim who decided, not the men with the rope. He wore the feathered crown your great-aunt stitched for the spring festival, and the silver chains hung from his brow and swayed with every step, so the officer at the checkpoint could not stop looking at them. He held up the paperwork, then the stamp, then looked at the elephant again, and for a long moment nobody moved except the water.
Three days we had waited on the bank with the baskets of dried chillies and the crates of brass bells that were supposed to be sold across the line. Mr Karim said the papers would clear by noon. Noon came and went. Then a boy from the village ran down with a sack of mangoes and said the officer's mother had been in our shop every Thursday for years, and that she liked her tea strong. I cannot tell you how much tea I carried that morning.
What I keep thinking about is the trunk. When Bhim reached the far bank he lifted it, curled it into a loop the way he always does when he is thinking, and then let it drop, and the whole crossing seemed to settle with it. The officer laughed, shook his head, and waved us through.
Now the crown hangs on the back of the shop door. Come home soon and I will show you how it was made.
Love, Amma
