Elephant within a hamsa hand design
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows an elephant's face framed by a hamsa hand shape, with an om symbol above its brow and a dotted mandala pattern filling the hand outline. Shading is built from fine stippled dots and clean black linework, with delicate leaves, flowers and dangling chain-like details around the edges. The design is entirely monochrome on a plain pale background and is centred in the frame.

Hemi had counted the dry seasons in notches on the well-house doorframe, and by the fourth notch the cistern was a cracked bowl. Lakshmi, the grey elephant who carried water for the village, had walked to the river every morning for thirty years, and every morning the river lay a little further off. The priest said her memory was failing. Hemi thought she remembered too much.

On the morning the monsoon was late, Lakshmi stopped at the gate of the old shrine, where a stone palm was carved with eyes and a ring of leaves, and would not move. Hemi pressed his palm flat against her ear, the way his grandmother had taught him, and murmured the names of every field that had gone to dust. Lakshmi lifted her trunk and let it fall, once, twice, and each fall loosed a slow drip of sound from the stone beneath her feet.
Beneath the shrine was a spring nobody had dug for, sealed under a slab marked with an om. When the men lifted it with ropes and a borrowed crowbar, water rose as though it had been waiting for someone to ask politely. Lakshmi drank first, then the children, then the goats, and the elders spent the afternoon arguing over whose hands had moved the stone.
Hemi said nothing. At dusk he walked back to the gate and found Lakshmi's footprints pressed into the mud, each one already brimming with water from a sky that had not yet opened over anyone else. Above the shrine, the first grey clouds were gathering like a mandala of slow, deliberate dots.
