Mandala-patterned elephant design

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A side-profile elephant drawn in black ink on a white background, with its body, ears and trunk filled with dense, symmetrical mandala, dot and paisley-like patterns. The linework is fine and detailed, with areas of solid black and stippled dots creating contrast. The design is monochrome and centred, with the elephant facing right and the trunk curled upwards.

Dear Nan, the fair set up on the common again last night, and I have finally met the elephant everyone in Hythe keeps talking about. She isn't a real one, of course. Mr Okonedo painted her onto a canvas panel in the back of the big wagon years ago, and she has been pulling the crowds ever since with those dots and rings all over her, like someone embroidered her skin on a Sunday and forgot to stop. The children want to climb into her ears. I told them the rings are where the rain collects and it runs out through her trunk, which is a lie, but it kept them quiet.

Yesterday the generator failed during the evening show and the whole field went dark except for the lamps over the ghost train. Mr Okonedo took the painted panel down off its hooks and carried it to the middle of the field on his shoulder, and he held it up so the lamps caught the black and the white. It looked like the elephant was walking out of the dark, one step at a time, with the stars in her hide. Nobody bought a ticket that night, and nobody asked for one back.

He asked me to fetch the brushes this morning, so I suppose I am now apprenticed to a painted elephant. I have not been any good at stippling yet. My dots come out as commas. He says that is how you learn that every mark has to be placed on purpose. We leave for Dover on Thursday, and I will send you a postcard from there. Write back to the address on the wagon and do not worry, the elephant is looking after us. Your loving grandson, Tomas.
