Ornate elephant design in black and white
Black and grey · Flash
A stylised elephant stands front on, with its head, ears, trunk and legs filled with dense swirls, scrollwork and small floral motifs. Bold solid black areas contrast with white patterned linework that forms the detail. The design is shown in black and white on a plain pale background, with no skin or body placement visible.

The elephant had been painted for the last show of the season, and Mrs Okonedo spent three hours at the bench with a fine brush, filling every grey panel of the old canvas tarp with scrolls until nothing was left plain. Nobody asked her to. The ringmaster had sold the big top to a scrapyard in Kent, and the animals would be going to a farm near Carlisle by the end of the month. She painted anyway, lamplight on the wet cloth, while the others packed crates around her.

On the last night the elephant was led out under the tarp, which hung from the ropes like a sail. Its ears spread wide and the floral marks along them caught the light from the single working lamp. A boy from the sideshow, Tomasz, who had learned his knots from the riggers, said the patterns looked like the ones on his grandmother's kitchen tiles in Gdańsk, and nobody corrected him, because in the end every pattern is some other pattern seen from further off.
When the lorry came at dawn, the elephant walked up the ramp without a rope. Mrs Okonedo stood at the gate with her brushes in a coffee tin. The tarp had been folded into the back of the truck, and where the scrolls had been painted thickest, the cloth had kept a faint white outline of the animal, like a hand left on a window.
