Anchor and compass rose on the ribs

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded anchor with a coiled rope wrapped around its shank sits over a compass rose with a dotted circle. The anchor uses soft grey shading and highlights for a three-dimensional look, while the compass points and fine dotted ring are cleaner linework. The image is in black and grey, shot close up on the side of a torso with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The chart table was the only dry place left aboard the Margaret Ellery, and you had claimed it by bribing the cook with your last tin of Navy cut. Outside, the Atlantic was doing what it had done for nine days, heaving grey water against the hull as if it had a grudge against iron. Your navigator, a silent Welshman called Pryce, had stopped trusting the instruments two days ago and trusted only the rope. He ran a coil of it through his fingers every morning, counting knots the way a priest counts beads.

On the tenth morning the sun came out thin and white, and Pryce brought you the brass dividers without a word. He pointed at the chart, then at the dotted ring you had drawn around the rose the night before, the one you swore was just a habit of the hand. The ring was the distance a man could sail on a single fresh bucket of water, and you had drawn it from the Azores to the rocks you hoped were still there. Pryce tapped the north point. Then he tapped the place where the anchor should have been, and said, very quietly, that it had been holding them all along.

That afternoon you hauled the old anchor up from the forepeak and lashed the rope around its shank, round and round until your palms bled through the tar. When the lookout finally shouted land, you did not look at the coast. You looked at the bronze ring on the anchor and thought of the thousand tides it had sat through on the sea floor, waiting for someone to tell it to stop.
