Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A bold block letter with a ringed dot above it sits on the calf, with a grey scroll banner across the middle bearing the script words Enjoy the Journey. The outlines are heavy and black, and the letter is shaded from black to red with a smooth gradient. The tattoo is centred in a close, straight-on photo against a plain skin background.

The coach from Settle was due on the Thursday, but the snow closed the top road, so the clockmaker stayed on at the Crown and Lamb with his trunk of brass wheels and a bill he had no intention of paying. My father said he would settle when the thaw came. I was seventeen and sent into the yard each morning with a shovel, and each morning he was already standing under the coaching arch with a pencil, drawing the old sign that hung above our door.

It was a tired board, the red lead gone the colour of liver where the weather had worked at it. A single block letter stood across it, shaded from black at the top to red at the foot, with an iron ring above like a lamp or a full moon left out in the frost. Across a scroll of cream canvas some painter long dead had written Enjoy the Journey in a looping hand. "Nobody on that board is going anywhere," the clockmaker said, not looking up from his paper. "The letter is only waiting for the coach."

On the Friday the road was cleared. He paid in coppers from the bottom of his trunk, eleven shillings and a small brass escapement that he pressed into my palm and told me to keep. My father counted the coins twice and then a third time, out of spite. I asked the clockmaker what the letter stood for, and he said the board had been painted by a man who could only afford one.

When the coach had gone down the valley, I climbed the ladder with a rag and rubbed the snow from the iron ring. The escapement ticked in my pocket. The first thin sun caught the scroll, and for once the words seemed meant for me.
