A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Ballroom at Saltmarsh had hand-painted boards over its doors for forty years, and keeping the letters fresh was my job. Every August I climbed the ladder with a pot of enamel and a fine brush, and every August Mr Ackroyd stood below in his cardigan telling me I was too slow.

The winter the damp got into the plaster, he asked me to paint something new on the wall above the bandstand. Not a price list, not the name of a band. He wanted a line you could read while the lights were low. I suggested Come Dancing and he shook his head. 'Write what the old ones say when they've had three gins and nothing left to prove,' he said. So I wrote enjoy the little things in a joined-up hand, the way my mother wrote shopping lists, and under it I put THINGS in capitals, because he insisted it should be shouted.

Nobody remarked on it for a month. Then a girl from the holiday flats stood beneath it with her shoes in one hand, reading it aloud to her friend, and the friend laughed so hard she had to sit on the edge of the stage. Mr Ackroyd died in March. At the funeral the band played the waltz he had danced with his wife for fifty years, and in his coat pocket I found a bus ticket, a brass button and a barley sugar wrapped in cellophane.

I have the button in my tin now, beside the brushes. Some Saturdays I climb the ladder just to touch up the T in THINGS, though it has never needed it.
