Happy script on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows the word happy written in a black, lowercase script on the outer upper arm. The linework is thin and even, with a single solid tone and no shading. The skin tone and plain pale wall behind keep the focus on the small lettering, which sits near the elbow while the person's other hand rests across the arm.

The pass shut on the Tuesday, and by Thursday the snow had reached the sills of the Hollin Inn and stopped there, like a dog waiting to be let in. Six of us were stranded: two drovers, a schoolmistress from Keswick, a clerk named Pritchard who held his spoon like a pen, and a girl who had come up on the carrier's cart and never said where she was going.

I found the word on the morning of the seventh day, traced in the frost on the inside of the taproom window. Someone had breathed on the glass and drawn it with a fingertip, the letters looping and leaning as if they had been written in a hurry or a good mood. Happy. Nobody owned to it. Pritchard blamed the draught. The schoolmistress blamed the drovers' boy, who could not write his own name. The girl only looked at it for a long moment, then went out to the yard in her shawl without her boots.

She came back an hour later with snow to her knees and a sprig of holly, which she tucked behind the clock. She did not explain, and I did not ask, though I had kept that inn for thirty years and knew how seldom a stranger offers anything freely.

When the thaw came, the cart returned for the mail and she left with it. The word stayed on the glass until the April rain, faint as breath, and I have never once wiped it clean.
