A close photograph of a forearm and hand held against grey speckled paving. Two outlined eight-pointed stars of different sizes sit above the wrist, with the words Think happy thoughts. set in a serif typeface beneath them. The linework is thin and even in black ink, and the composition is centred on the forearm with the hand and yellow cartoon nails at the bottom.

"Think happy thoughts," he used to say whenever she stood rigid at the gallery rail as a girl, her hands white on the wood. It seemed a daft thing to tell a child, but it was the only advice of his that stuck. Tonight the mechanism coughed, the lamp slowed, and the beam dropped to a smear. So she thought of the bakery on Fore Street, cinnamon and the ginger cat asleep on the flour sacks, and her shoulders came down a little.
When she stepped out onto the gallery the sea was a grey wall with no edges. Then, low over the Scar, a gap opened and two stars swam through it, one large and one smaller, exactly where her father's pencil had put them. She took the bearing, cranked the spare lamp by hand, and held it steady until the Mary Ellen's sidelight swung into view.
Tom came up the tower steps at dawn with his cap crushed in his fist. "Sky was black," he said. "Didn't know how you saw anything." Ada rolled up the chart, careful of the pencil. "I didn't look at the sky," she said. "I looked at the stars, and I thought about cake."
