Envelope, roses and banner on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A large tattoo on the upper arm shows a grey-shaded envelope with a red wax seal, framed by two red roses and small blue forget-me-not flowers. Two scrolling banners carry black lettering that reads "Don't let the muggles get you down", and the outlines are bold and dark. The palette mixes red, blue and pale skin tones with grey shading on the envelope, and the design fills the frame against a plain light background.

Dear Marnie, the post van finally made it out past the salt flats, so you'll get this a week late and smelling of diesel. I've been sat in the cab of the Bedford since Tuesday, waiting on a part that Ray swears is coming from Tucson. The road out here runs straight as a ruler for forty miles and then just stops at a cattle grid, and I keep thinking you'd have found something to laugh about in that.

I did the thing you told me to. I wrote the letter to Dad and sealed it with the brass stamp from the glovebox, the one with the rose on it. Then I didn't post it. It's still folded in my jacket. You always said a wax seal makes a person honest, because nobody breaks a seal they're proud of. Don't let the muggles get you down, you wrote on my birthday card, and I laughed, because we were nine and you'd got the word from a library book and thought it meant ordinary people in general.
Yesterday a girl in a yellow hat pulled up beside me at the grid and asked if I had a spare envelope. She had nothing to post. She just wanted her hands busy. I gave her an empty one, and she turned it over and over like there might be a map on the back.
So here is the letter I didn't send, sealed now with a blank wax disc and no name on the front. If it reaches you, you'll know I finally stopped waiting for the van. Write back care of the grid. Love, Jo.
