Roses and mint shoe on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A mint green shoe with a polka dot panel sits at the centre, with a small red rose inside its opening. Two larger red roses with dark green leaves frame the design, and a strand of white pearls hangs down from the shoe. Bold black outlines and flat solid fills give the piece a classic look, set against a floral fabric background.

Dear Vi,

The mint shoes came in this morning, the pair you left behind when you went off to Brighton with that trombone player. Mr Ashby set them on the counter in a paper bag as if they might bite him, and I had to sit down on the stool before I could look at them properly. The polka dot panel has faded to the colour of weak tea. Someone has been stitching at the heel with black thread, not very well, and the rosebud you painted inside the sole last summer is still there, just about, under a hundred dances.

He wants them mended for his daughter's wedding. I said I would see what could be done, which is what Mother always said when she meant no. Then I sat with my palm flat on the left one for most of an hour, listening to the wireless through the back wall and thinking about the night you sewed those pearls on, pricking your thumbs and swearing like a docker.

The strand is still good, I'll give you that. I restitched every pearl this afternoon and hung the shoe in the window beside the Singer, where the sun comes in at four and makes the green look almost like something from a film. Mr Ashby can collect them Saturday. Tell me if you want the other pair posted, or whether you'd rather I kept them and let the dancing go on without you.

Your loving sister, Joan
