Eucharisteo script on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single word, eucharisteo, is written in flowing cursive across the inner wrist. The thin black linework is even and solid, with no shading. The skin is pale and the knitted mustard and brown fabric fills the background, with the word running across the centre of the frame.

Snow had buried the lane to Hexworth by the Tuesday, and by Thursday the inn's larder held more guests than food. Mrs Dorothea Vane stood at the kitchen table with a pencil behind her ear and a list of names, counting blankets. Her nephew Tom, nineteen and useless with a shovel, had tracked slush across the flags twice before she told him to sit down.

The stranger was a travelling clockmaker named Pim who had arrived on the last cart before the road closed. He had given up his room to a family with a baby and now slept in the boot room on a folded horse rug, muttering about escapements. Dorothea had not asked him to. She had simply found the rug on the bench one morning and understood.

On Friday the ham ran out, so she made broth from the last onions and a bone she kept for emergencies. Pim came in stamping, cheeks red, carrying a box of brass gears he had been mending for a child upstairs. He set a chipped bowl before her and said it was the first hot meal anyone had put in front of him since his mother died. Dorothea did not know what to say, so she took the chalk from the board by the door and wrote the Greek word her grandfather had carved above the hearth: eucharisteo. Pim asked what it meant. Thank you, she said, though it was more than that, a thanks that wanted passing on.

By Sunday the thaw had begun and the lane showed black under the melt. Pim left a small gear on the dresser, wrapped in a page torn from the ledger, with the same word written in his careful hand. Dorothea wiped the board clean but kept the gear in her apron pocket, where it stayed until spring.
